croatian born american electrical engineer who introduced alternating current (AC) for the transmission of electricity over long distances. he built transformers and A.C. electric motors. although today alternating current is most widely used in industries and homes, he had to struggle for its acceptance in opposition to thomas A. EDISON, his former associate, who strongly favoured DIRECT CURRENT for the transmission of electricity.
